Lantern Slide

MOA: University of British Columbia

3000/62 a-b

Single slipper lantern slide. A rectangular wooden frame holds two glass plates side by side, one stationary and the other moveable (part b). The stationary plate shows a vibrantly coloured, printed image of a barber dressed in yellow, red and white, standing close beside a large man with a frothy beard, in white and blue. The background is black. Part b is printed at top centre with the yellow-sleeved arm of the barber holding a razor. When the pane slides back and forth, it appears that the barber is shaving the customer’s beard. The frame is built to accommodate the moving slide, having a large groove in the end of one side for the plate to move into, and a semi-circular finger hole at the edge. Written on label: "easy shaving one penny"
