Dark blue porcelain vase. A tall vase with a gold rimmed lip, short neck, and flaring round shoulder that narrows through the body to a small base. The exterior is a shiny dark blue; the interior and bottom are white. A gold seal is shown on the exterior just below the shoulder.

Narrative
A gift from the Emperor and Empress of Japan with the Imperial Seal of Japan (or the Chrysanthemum Seal). This vase was presented to President Toope by the Emperor during their official visit to UBC on 8 July 2009, as part of an 11-day tour marking the 80th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the Nitobe Memorial Garden and the Museum of Anthropology. That was Emperor Akihito’s first visit to UBC since 1953, when he toured the UBC campus as Crown Prince.
