Byzantine coin of Irene, 797-802. Obverse: bust of Irene, facing front; she wears an elaborate crown with a cross and a loros, an embroidered and jewelled scarf; to left, she holds a globus cruciger; to right, she holds a cruciform sceptre; to left, inscription says ‘EIRI’; to right, it is illegible. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, ‘XXX’ in a vertical position; to right, ‘NNN’ in a vertical position; above, cross; beneath, ‘A’.
