Byzantine coin of Theophilus, 829-842. Obverse: bust of Theophilus, facing front; he wears a chlamys and a crown with cross; to left, he holds a patriarchal cross; to left, there is also a star; in front of his body, he holds an akakia, a silk roll containing dust that symbolizes mortality ; to left, inscription says ‘ΘE’; to right, it says ‘OFILbASIL’. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, ‘XXX’ in a vertical position; to right, ‘NNN’ in a vertical position; above, cross; beneath, ‘Θ’.
