Byzantine coin of Manuel I, 1143-1180. Obverse: the Virgin Mary, enthroned; she has a halo; to left, inscription says ‘MP’; to right, ‘ΘV’. Reverse: Manuel I, standing and facing front; he wears a loros, an embroidered and jewelled scarf; to left, he holds a labarum, a military standard; to right, he holds a globus cruciger with a patriarchal cross; his head has been stamped twice, one above the other. The inscription on the obverse in translation says ‘Mother of God’. Coin is concave.
