Byzantine coin from the Latin Rulers of Constantinople Period, 1204-1261. Obverse: bust of the Virgin Mary; to left, inscription says ‘MP’; to right, star. Reverse: bust of an emperor, facing front; he wears a loros (an embroidered and jewelled scarf); to left, he holds a long cross; to right, he holds a globus cruciger. Coin is most likely overstruck, as there is a second globus cruciger on top of the bust on the obverse. Coin is concave.

Narrative
The Latin Rulers of Constantinople, who minted the ‘Latin Imitation’ coins, captured the city after the Fourth Crusade in 1204. They were driven out by the Byzantine Greeks in 1261. The Latin Rulers also occupied Thessalonica from 1204-1224.
