Open-weave basket with a tumpline fibre strap attached. The basket is rectangular, with a slightly rounded base, walls flaring gently outward toward a thick, wrapped rim. Short cords are attached at each corner to hold the tumpline strap, or handle, which is a braid of many thin cotton strands. At the centre of the wool strap, strips of cotton fabric in green, pink and other colours are tightly woven in, to create padding.

  • History Of Use

    Baskets with an open weave like this one, were used for activities like gathering shellfish. For example water could be poured over top of clams to clear away sand, and it would all drain out through the open weave.
