Carved wooden standing figure. Female figure is nude with pointed breasts. She stands with feet together on a small round base. Her arms are held close to her body, and hands together in front of her abdomen. She wears a cap with three descending hornbills.

  • History Of Use

    Kulebele (ancient mother) figure used by male Poro and female Sandogo initiation societies. In Poro, figures of the primordial mother confirm her stature as its head; Sandogo, which trains females in divination, incorporates smaller nature spirits in its shrines. The production of Senufo wooden sculpture is the purview of the Kulebele, woodcarvers who traditionally carve domestic and ritual wooden items.
