Gable Board

Painted oval-shaped gable board with design carved in shallow relief. The negative space is filled with white or red pigment, and the raised design is black. The top of the board has a stylized face, with two carved-out spaces for eyes. The back is undecorated, has a raised area at the centre, and has mounting hardware at top.

Narrative
Collected by Jack Lieber in Papua New Guinea, Eastern Highlands Division, from August 1970 - June 1972. He was researching village communities in and around Goroka, where he was lecturing under the auspices of UNESCO at the Goroka Teachers College.
