Square ceramic tile decorated with a clematis vine design. Centre has dark blue flowers on a dark turquoise ground. The centre is bordered by repeating squares with small white flowers and white bands with repeating light blue dots on dark yellow ground. Surface is glazed. Back of tile has 6 raised lines. Manufacturer’s mark, Minton Hollins Co Patent Tile Works Stoke on Trent No 2 Buff, stamped on ridges.

    Design by Augustus Pugin et al, for Minton Hollins & Co. Minton entered into partnership with Michael Hollins in 1845, forming the tile making firm of Minton, Hollins & Company. The company was at the forefront of a large, newly developing market as a supplier of durable decorative finishes for walls and floors in churches, palaces and public buildings, as well as domestic houses.
